Gentoo Linux is enhancing its support for ARM64/AArch64 and 32-bit ARM with the donation of a 96-core Ampere Altra Max server from Arm Ltd's "Works on Arm" team. This server, equipped with 256GB of RAM and 4TB of NVMe storage, will significantly speed up the build times for Gentoo ARM packages and improve testing capabilities.
This initiative follows similar contributions aimed at boosting ARM development, including a server provided to Linus Torvalds for Linux kernel testing. While newer AmpereOne processors offer advancements like DDR5 and PCIe 5.0, they remain limited in availability and primarily target cloud environments. Currently, Ampere Computing is the main option for on-premise ARM workstations and servers.
